:heh: from 1997-1999 had some of the most GOAT games to ever come out of any era...from Unreal to Unreal Tournament, to Quake 3, to Half Life... the fukk are you talking about ? These are literally some of the top 5-10 FPS of all time :dead: what do you mean Goldeneye had no competition :what:

you continue to talk about shyt you have no clue about

1997-1999 was one of the GOAT eras of gaming PERIOD :heh: from Half Life to Starcraft :heh: Diablo released December 31st 1996 :heh: Playstation and N64 was dropping heat monthly from shyt like Mario Kart to games you stan now like Metal Gear Solid :heh:

this might be the first time ive used this word but im literally perplexed on how you can even come to the conclusion that Goldeneye had no competition :laff: fukking idiot

Golden eye dropped around THE MOST competition you fukking idiot :heh:

edit: you live in this twilight world where whatever you think, is literally the opposite of reality. shyt is crazy :wow:

actually every game mentioned in that post eventually became console games :skip:

and Goldeneye had plenty of competition just on N64 between the dope ass wrestling games that came out plus mario kart type games. You just got no idea what you are talking about, as usual, bytch ass mafukka

Competition of the same type of game is what my original post said. Obviously there were great games in other genres, but if you were playing a multiplayer shooter on consoles in 1997 goldeneye was pretty much your only choice.

that is a loaded question for a couple reasons:

1 - there is no way to really determine a gen defining game, especially in the first 2 years of a gen...
2 - gen defining and gen best are 2 different things... sometimes the game that helped shaped a gen isn't necessarily deemed the best of that gen...
3 - the most important reason of all: it's all opinion...what might be gen defining to one, doesn't mean it was gen defining to another...

you know what though, i'll play along: yep, a gen defining game has been dropped...that game: destiny...it's proving that a game with a strong mmo influence can succeed on consoles...yea, the game includes shooter, rpg, and action/adventure influences as well, but it's foundation is mmo...and despite all the negative press it received for being repetitive, lacking content, not living up to the hype, etc., the game is going stronger than ever....and with more anticipation/hype for the next expansion release than the initial game release (like other popular mmos), it's only getting stronger/growing....

...with that said: if you waiting for a gen defining game to drop before you game in the new gen, you cheating yourself cause it's a lot of fun games that are being dropped left and right you missing out on....

how many of those games were on console?

Goldeneye was one of the first FPS's on console, plus it had 4 player split-screen

Goldeneye wasnt even the first big FPS on N64.. Duke Nukem was huge on N64 and was 4 player split

do we all live in this world where if someone had a N64 they didnt have a PC to play half life on ? Ok :duck:

me personally ? I didnt have a PC but I had an imac but it could play unreal and unreal tournament and quake 3.. but all my friends who had n64 and playstation also had PC capable of half life

not only that, why are we pigeon holing this conversation into FPS, im confused ? The thread is about games.. thats not defined to 1 genre. I said people played goldeneye for hours a day for a long time and Meach tried to flip it the only way he could and make the argument 1 dimensional(tried to make it only about FPS to fit his argument, but his own list isnt just FPS). You're smarter and better than to fall for that @daze23

I said goldeneye was fun for hours a day for months, to make a point that these games now a days dont hold people attention for long. Some how, in true Arcadium fashion, the conversation got dumbed down to "it had no FPS competition back then" like people are immune to playing more than 1 genre. The "counter argument" had NOTHING to do with the point I was making.

I truly hate this garbage sub forum most of the times :snoop: just some of the most dumb posters ive met in my 20 years on the internet :snoop:

that Duke Nukem game came out like 2 years after Goldeneye, and I don't remember it being very popular

and yeah, most people didn't have access to a capable gaming PC back then. I had one, but honestly my 3dfx card was struggling, as well as my dial-up connection. and I was always into PC's, but no one else I knew had a decent PC

the first competitive FPS on console and it had 4 player split-screen. it was a phenomena. Mario Kart and such were also popular, but those types of games has been done before. Goldeneye was a lot of people's first opportunity to shoot their friend in the face. the cost of entry to do that on PC was in a completely different ballpark

No. Thing about generational defining games is that you don't know if they are that for a few years at least because of the impact they had on the industry, and beyond.

Keeping it real the last generational defining game probably Starcraft 2 or LoL because they were the games that helped explode the big new thing in gaming over the past 5 years - twitch/streaming and cult gaming personalities.

Arguments could also be made for Naughty Dog's stuff last gen.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Been contemplating on copping one of the two consoles , but I personally don't see any reason too since 360 hasn't been discontinued , no generation defining game has been release (To my knowledge atleast ) and new games are still being released for the previous generation .. it's been almost two years and nothing profound has transpired since the 8th generation of game consoles made it's arrival , shyt is looking lackluster to me I'm starting to think the gaming industry going through an innovation drought ..
remember when systems wouldn't even launch without 5-6 game changers on the release day:ohlawd:

then it slowly went to 3-4 months :yeshrug:

now what the fukk is this shyt :mjcry:

no uncharted, god of war, gears of war, halo.. barely any games developed purely for next gen.. none of them AAA

i mean don't get me wrong.. i'm enjoying what's dropped.. but i was just thinking of this same thing the other day.. where are THE games we all wanna see... that game that makes you :merchant: cause you can't even believe it's possible in a game yet

What was the gen defining game last gen?
uncharted set it off for me... dropped a year after ps3.. there was no other game like it at the time

i didn't have an xbox off top so i couldn't tell you for them.. but that's what told me "oh shyt this is something i couldn't see possible on a ps2"

i haven't seen that game yet.. they haven't made it.. the one that says "oh shyt, this is next level"..

like i said before.. they used to drop with the system... now it's two years past launch and we looking at 2016 :francis:
