Yeah. Negro is the term for black. Negro is also used in terms of color description for objects or animals, like... o corvo é negro, means it's a black raven.

The slang version of the word, specially in northeastern Brazil is nego (man) or nega (woman)... but northeastern people are pretty loose with the slang, like, sometimes when a guy says ''as negas'' he means black women, other times he means women in general, black or white or mixed. It must sound confusing to you, I guess, but it's pretty common slang in northeast.

If you count mixed people (pardos) as black, then blacks are the majority in every state in the north and northeast of Brazil. If you count only fully black people, then north and northeast still have the most. In southeast there's like a bajillion people of every race, because that's where the big cities are. Almost no blacks in the south though: Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, those are traditionally white states.

Non-blacks say negro with very little repercussion. Matter of fact I've seen proud black people insisting they want to be called negros and not morenos, because moreno is like... an euphemism, like something to say you just have darker skin but you're not really black. I obviously don't speak for every black person in Brazil, to say if they take offense or not, but society in general doesn't offer backlash.
