It's done in some African cultures, and yes, generally only wealthy men take on multiple wives.

POLYGAMY...BAD idea for the average man:
1. No one thinks they're below average
2. Someone will always outcompete you
3. The charismatic dude your wife works with is more liable to steal your mate than her boss. It doesn't take THAT Much more to win some one.
4. It hurts people on the low spectrum
5. Relationships are a huge part of identity and a few people sapping up all the viable candidates seeds resentment and leads to societal ills when people can't channel their energy.
6. Women would be sapping up male candidates too. Don't think some paid woman wouldn't do the same
7. The same issue results in gay couples
8. No one thinks their partner settled. Well with polygamy, NO ONE will settle.

Not yet lol. But when I get wealthy, I can see myself with 3 wives that will fall in line.
