In this case, it is not what is scientifically true that matters. It is what the people think is true that affects their feelings towards each other.

So the European Mexicans (considering themselves White) look down upon the Mestizo/Taino Mexicans (Whom they consider to be non-White). So in their minds, they are not the same people at all.
