Friend of mine was saying how the Source used to give fukked up reviews (ie less mics). I said naw, because I generally remembered them being on point. But after looking back some of these albums not being classics.

Yea I remember dude who ran the Source back in the day straight up said that Outkast’s debut album deserved a 5.
IWW and RD both deserved 4.5

A lot of these albums were slighted. I understand why some didn't get a 5 though. Illmatic got a 5 in 1994. The Source was not handing these out like candy in that era which is possibly why Kast nor Biggie got a 5 that year.

You have to remember 5 Mics was almost impossible to get in real time back then.
You also have to remember how much heat was dropping AND the regional biases. You could legit say Reasonable Doubt wasn't a top 10 album of 1996.

I've said this before but (as far as anyone I was around) nobody really cared about the Source reviews. Half the time the album/magazine wouldn't come out at the same time, and/or the magazine wouldn't be readily available so the review was a moot point. People formed their own opinions totally independent of the review....which is why The Source retroactively changed a bunch of reviews to fit how people felt.
People did however argue a lot over who got the Hip-Hop Quotable.

I used to respect how hard it was to get a high review in the source though. If anything got at least a 4 and a half I'd be like "alright I gotta check this out" even if I wasn't a fan of that particular artist.
