300,000 is pretty much the new benchmark come June 1st...

Labels have restructured deals... less money in budgets but less expectations in sales... it's still a shytload of money to make tho...

Why we gotta lower standards for these rap nikkas though? :leostare:

Last I checked, Lumineers, Fun., and Imagine Dragons all dropped debut major albums and are going platinum on these fools. :bryan:

Why can't these rappers do it? :smugfavre:

Looking at some of these rappers' sales these days... all that grinding and it's leading to nothing. Meanwhile, your favorite country or alternative artist is selling units without needing 5 free mixtapes to do it. :pachaha:

Traditional rap music (not this hipster/indie BS) is falling off in the worst way... minus Kendrick and a few others...

not to say that other genres arent mostly trash these days as well....BUT hip hop is like 95% garbage.... all carried by production with simpleton rhymes that my 3 year old god son could write...its a shame...nobody has passion anymore its just all about who can make the catchiest garbage song and make money...only a rare select few rappers that still give a shyt

Kendrick did some nice numbers, but I won't be surprised if they brought some of them albums. He's a good rapper, but he lacks what all rappers this generation lacks. CHARACTER!

Rappers were damn near like Super Heroes, they had origin stories, personality, their beats reflected THEM, they didn't just hope on instrumentals and spit.

The industry needs stars, INTERESTING PEOPLE who happen to be able to rap.
There's a lot of good rappers, but none of them have character, they're boring people and have lived uneventful lives so they have boring music that doesn't stand the test of time.

Which leads me to the biggest reason the game is fukked up, JAY-Z

All this young nikkaz wanna be Jay-Z, but they not Jay-Z, the rhyme style, the beat selection is one thing.

But They never sold drugs in Marcy Projects, they were never fly money savvy people, so when they get money and try to stunt they all corny.
When I listen to Drake, big Sean, and Wiz I don't hear the triumphant disdain from society when they talk about money and balling like I heard throughout every Jay-Z track, the grit is not there, they ain't stunters, they only trying to be flashy because thats what they think rappers are suppose to do. They have no character, so there music lacks character.

Every Rapper exaggerates their life story, but there has to be something there to exaggerate in the first place.

Let me break down the mega stars of Rap to the new breed and you will see.

50 Cent= Street Hustler from Queens, Mother got killed, lead his own crew in the drug business, got shot 9 times, climbed to the top of the rap game while taking down his enemies in both the streets and the industry.

Eminem=White boy who went to all black school in Detroit, got beat up everyday, mom was drug addict, honed his skills in the hood Battling credible MC's earning him respect, got noticed by the Legendary Dr. Dre, and the rest his history.

Jay-Z= Successful drug dealer from Marcy Projects, quit while he was head, started his own record label with the aura of the streets surrounding him self made man who broke his way into the industry and built an empire

now some new cats

Drake= Kid TV star from Canada turned rapper.

Wiz Khalifa= Pot head from PA

Big Sean = Goofy kid from Detroit, who meet Kanye and a radio station, begged him for a record deal.

Lil Wanye= Child rapper turned dope fiend

the rest of these lil nikkaz can't even be mentioned, because we don't know shyt about them anyway

You see the difference.

If your not an interesting person you should be allowed to be rap star, should be rendered to being writer to make a living, and the rap industry would thrive

I should be fukking A&R vip of operations or something

Cuz country/ Pop/ alt fans arent bootlegging massive amounts of music. Those rap music blogs that give away free music are just a gateway to bootlegging.

'Oh they're using hulkshare/mediafire to upload tracks to their website?'

*googles hulkshare/mediafire and MC Pee Pants. Rapes his entire catalog Rick Ross style. Complains about sales and state of hip hop on a forum*

Rap as a genre is as healthy as its been since gangsta rap killed off all the progressive cultural elements. The sales don't reflect who is consuming the music. Neither do Datpiff downloads when I can email a link out to 30 people who send it to 900 people.

I get what you're saying. And everyone is bringing up legit points.

My point is that these artists are not allowing themselves to build a fanbase that cares about supporting artists rather than being popular. You'd think 2 Chainz, Future or Rick Ross is selling multi-platinum with the radio/club play they get. Yet these rock bands can drop one single, push the hell out of it, and get their fanbase to buy into it. Then the casual fans hear it on radio/youtube, download the single and THEN buy the album. And bands like Fun and Imagine Dragons definitely cater to a younger crowd.

Selling gold is nothing to snicker at, it's great. Just saying, these rappers could sell a lot more given their popularity. But when you put hella mixtapes on Datpiff and let every blog get your new singles, no one is going think twice about buying the album. They're waiting on those Sharebeast/Hulkshare links.

Whats funny about this is how many of the rappers who strictly give away free music claim to be hustlers.

:whoo:

*Gets a G pack on consignment from the label. Gives away the entire thing in testers. Waits for label to front them another package.*
