Here's where I think alot of the post-GKMC backlash comes from. It has little to do with his talent but all to do with his style. This issues are:

1. He's incredible corny. From the sanctimonious consciousness to the crying on tracks, and the different voices. You can't help but go

2. His style is highly poetic. If every track he dropped was in the style of Hood Politics. This thread would be unnecessary. Instead, he favors a wordy poetic style with subtle metaphors that at times is the equivalent of audio

4. Dude is crazy emotional. Alot of people aren't the type that want to connect with their emotions or the emotions of others. so when one encounters an artist like K.Dot, who pours pure emotion into every verse, it can be uncomfortable to regularly listen to.

5. People already have heard artists like blackstar, D'angelo, The Roots, etc. Dude doesn't get credit for bringing back that soulquarian style. He ain't really saying nothing new. In fact, I've yet to hear some mind blowing relevant ions or insights from K.Dot. His fans greatly exaggerate his Impact. TBH, I would say that Chance the Rapper is a more groundbreaking MC than Kendrick.

6. He along with J.Cole has brought on a resurgence of backpackers.

7. He's not that fun to listen to. Say what you want about future but there's something viscerally exciting about his music.

Kendrick is wack as fukk. I've never seen an artist gets hyped as much as I've seen Kendrick. It's unreal.

Then again, this is Interscope we're talking about. Marketing pop rap and pretend-depth is their specialty.

IMO, hiphop doesn't need more artists like kendrick. The less backpackers and TDE, the better.

We need more artist like Mobb, Wu, Ghostface, Redman, Outkast, Killer Mike. etc.

Artists that got skills and content but are still highly entertaining with charasmatic personalities to boot.

Cole doesnt have anything in his catalog better than S80 or GKMC though.

BUT. . As a rapper, like bars... he sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.. like you can't quote me great bars from Kendricc. He is 3 staccs meets PAC... passion substance style... but when he raps shyt ain't much above average... great flow delivery cadence switching, all that... but no bars

And j. Cole gets wayyyyy more love in the streets then y'all give um credit for. The two had the best albums all year.

A lot good points. The main reasons I don't really like Kendrick is because of his voice "effects" (shyt is incredibly corny), shyt even his normal voice ain't nothing special. I grew up listening to MCs like Pac, Meth, P, Ghost, Busta, Red, Nas, Mos, etc...so it's hard for me to keep up when an MC's voice is not really special. Can't comment on Chance because he's another guy I don't manage to listen to.

I'm not even sure about the whole "poetic" thing. I read a lot and honestly he sometimes sounds like the guy who WANTS to be poetic. Also, his impact is widely overblown, they really just should've let him do his thing and catch his place instead of the whole bs "new Pac" stance.

For me he's the Bron of HH, the guy who is great (no denying his talents) but is being hailed as a savior or whatever .That's where the backlash comes from imo

Personally find Vince, Chano, possibly Earl, at least, to be more compelling voices (writing wise) from this generation alone. Actually i dont think k.dot writes that well-got some moments of great clarity but tonnes of convoluted filler bars imo. Kendrick got a great team around him to make big statement musak tho. Hard to argue against the idea that he's leading the lines but I don't agree he the talent tree topper (his friends boosting).
