The Law of Conversions says that for every 100 people that see an advertisement/commercial, at least ONE will buy, no matter how shytty the ad/commercial is.
This is why huge shows/events with lots of viewers are a big deal to companies and advertizes. Look at how commercials are treated during the Super Bowl.
Now, think about how many people are "viewing" facebook and google.
Add that to the fact that both platforms give you the ability to laser target groups of people by their demographics, thereby GREATLY increasing the chance to sell something to the people that may actually want it.
Google and facebook charges advertisers anywhere from 5 cents to 100+ dollars either every time someone clicks an ad you make or per every 1000 times they show your ad.
Both companies AND individuals pay facebook and google MILLIONS a day doing this.
