Somebody on facebook said they paid for gas on their debit card and the gas station put a $100 hold on the card

Haven't used a debit card to pay for gas in a long time, but I know some credit cards do that.
Uuumm yeah. It’s been like that for YEARS at some gas stations. If you don’t have $100 on your card it will decline the transaction at some stations. GATE here in FL does it and Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh does it, in my experience, so I’m sure it’s many more. You just avoid it by using credit instead of debit though

Never use a debit card to purchase gas or online purchases.

Wow. This is new to me. I had no idea. I'm always charging credit so it never affected me.
Amex hit me with a $165 hold the other day. Been so long since I got gas I was confused as fukk.
Yes this is common. They place a hold on the card to ensure they get the funds. The actual amount will post to your account in a couple of days.
One of the many reasons not to use debit cards though.

I was literally getting gas yesterday & it was a sign on there that said exactly this.
Think it said if you insert a chip card there wouldn’t be a hold? Either way shyt getting paid as I don’t pay attention to these things

If you’re using a debit card for gas make sure you go inside and pay at the register. Never swipe your card at the pump!

Yep it's true. Read an article from a mainstream news source, about it recently (last week). I guess some gas stations, have been doing it, for some time now (usually $50). Supposedly A LOT more gas stations are beginning to do this. Holds are going up to $150. Supposedly due to the prices, the stations are having to pay for their gas.
It's also to avoid getting stiffed by customers right now. For example..."Ray" goes to a gas station, knowing he only has $15.00 on his credit/debit card. He goes to the pump, swipes his card, and proceeds to put $60 in his tank (instead), purposely (overdrafting his card). Now they're attempting to ensure, you really have the money in your account or available. Otherwise your forced to come into the actual station/store where you can't pull that move. There is no hold, if you pay at the counter.

Just happened to me. Filled my gas at my local Fred Meyer/Kroger which was $33. Looked at my account today and see a $175 hold. I always used that gas station. Not anymore
