IMO, It doesn't seem that odd that some/many black people aren't familiar with those flags or colors. That came out of the the UNIA and most Aframs outside the North East were not familiar and/or influenced by the movement. Kenya has the same colors in their flag which might be the reason the person associated it with Africa.
