Someone break down Discord for me

Ok so Im in my late 30s so I'm old enough to experience Yahoo and AOL chat where A/S/L was the norm. I spent my college years in mIRC pretty much pirating any Dreamcast game released, music, software, porn, you name it. Saw the transition away from chat to message boards. And now it seems Discord is the move but this shyt is just a chat room. Am i missing something? Did folks just re-create something from the 90s?

It's a chat room on your phone that happens to be on a platform meant for gaming.

It's basically a chatroom that's web based, phone based and app based for PCs. You can create custom servers for whatever you like and within the server have channels for whatever sub topics you want.

lol i don't know what discord is either, just heard of it. im the same age as you where AOL chatrooms in the 90's an mIRC early 2000's.
