They're definitely changing up the story from Sonic Adventure 2 (which is fine).

It also doesn't look like the government is confusing Shadow with Sonic (which was always the dumbest part of the plot) nor does it look like Robotnik is the one who broke Shadow out like in the games.

I'm fine with them not following the exact story from the games though, gotta streamline things for a 1-2 hour movie.

In one of the gba games they alude to Gerald based Shadow off of the murals of super sonic that were on angle island. It's one of those story elements Sega left vague but it makes the most sense Gerald made "the ultimate life form" a hedgehog.

I feel like that is one things that they really can't change about Shadow. The main theme of SA2 and Shadow's character is the dualities between him and Sonic.
