Denzel Washington Thriller The Equalizer Will Get a Sequel
The upcoming film is testing so well, Sony is already moving forward with its follow-up.

The Equalizer doesn’t open in theaters until September but favorable reactions to test screenings have prompted Sony Pictures and Escape Artists to announce a sequel is already in the works. Screenwriter Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2, The Mechanic, 16 Blocks), who wrote the first film, will pen the script.

Based on a popular 1985 TV show, the film adaptation of The Equalizer stars Denzel Washington as retired intelligence officer Robert McCall. In the series, McCall advertised his pro bono troubleshooting services to crime victims who had nowhere else to turn. The film version, directed by Antoine Fuqua (Olympus Has Fallen, Training Day), finds McCall in the crosshairs of the Russian mob thanks to an act of kindness toward a prostitute played by Chloe Grace Moretz (Carrie, Kick-Ass). Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Haley Bennett, David Harbour and Marton Csokas also star.



According to TheWrap, “The Equalizer has been testing through the roof, prompting Sony to move quickly on a sequel so the project has momentum by the time the first film hits theaters on Sept. 26. A mid-December test screening reportedly earned the highest scores for an R-rated movie in the studio’s history.”

TheWrap also notes that if Washington agrees to terms for the sequel, it will be the first time he’s starred in a sequel in his long career.

Denzel has only died in like 3 of his movies (Training Day, Safe House, Man On Fire) and it was a announced way back that this film was set up as a potential franchise. So no surprises here
