yeah the thing about drives now is random access being able to jump around to different areas of storage. I think it had more to do with how tapes were read(sequential) i.e having to listen to a whole album. maybe they can take a tapes magnetic tape and spread it out on something like a cd but idk

tape drives are still around. they're just expensive and slow. plus the medium can be damaged by magnetism or heat. anyone that was around for music cassette tapes knows they degrade over time. not a big deal when your music starts sounding all wavy, but any change to your important data can be a big deal. I think they're best for full system backups, and then you store that tape somewhere 'safe'
