Fast forward 2025 PSN outage. Any PS5 console without the built in disc drive was a paper weight...
PS4 era Sony bashed Xbox One for that checking in and a selling point was lending friends a gane...but fast forward PS5 digitals/slims/pros on that same type of Xbox time even with a disc drive attachment

You do realize that you can play your digital games offline on PlayStation.
Plenty of people couldn't launch games. Maybe because some were not set as primary or some first time trying to play a game, fine. But many folks was up in arms...not good.
Now that the disc drive is sold separate you need an online check in to install games the first time.
People used to be up in arms about online check ins.
But of course it’s just fine when it’s needed on playstation

They buried owning your digital license because of a cousin on a submarine that wouldn't be able to check in.Now that the disc drive is sold separate you need an online check in to install games the first time.

But it never made sense to me how you could offer a network service that involved personal information and server maintenance for free... unless you weren't really dedicated to it being a long term thing you planned on investing in in the 1st place.
