Sony is widely rumored to be working on a virtual reality headset to compete with the Oculus Rift, and the truth could be revealed quite soon. Sony has just revealed it will host a new session at the 2014 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, titled "Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment." Unlike most presentations at the conference, this particular session has an extremely short description that doesn't reveal what to expect, saying only that Sony will host a presentation on "innovation at PlayStation" and "the future of gaming."

However, the list of speakers suggests that this won't be a presentation that attendees will want to miss. PlayStation R&D director Richard Marks and his colleague Anton Mikhailov will be present. Marks developed the original EyeToy, and the duo teamed up on the PlayStation Move motion controller and the new PlayStation Camera for PS4. As part of Sony's Magic Lab, they've experimented on a number of other ideas, including eye-tracking technology for the PS4. And at GDC 2014, they'll be joined by PlayStation software boss Shuhei Yoshida, which helps suggest that there could be an announcement of some sort. Sony hasn't been shy in the past to demonstrate new technology at GDC, showing off the PlayStation Vita's augmented reality capabilities for the first time in a developer presentation at the conference.

Still, there's no smoking gun here to suggest that the company will definitely have a VR headset or even an announcement of any sort. Sony surely knows how much interest there is in such a device, and could be playing up the intrigue to guarantee attendance. It wouldn't be the first time.

the thing with VR is you need to maintain a very high framerate (120fps) for the effect to work properly. but maybe they've come up with some magic to make it happen

I thought it was 60fps? I remember hearing how 60fps was needed for everything to be smooth for the OR.

idk, I think that's the listed minimum, but people are saying the 3D effect suffers at that framerate

https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4921

So it's a known problem already that 60 fps is way too low, this alone causes serious problems with perception such as smearing and strobing (and judder in between of them), and solving one of them only ramps up severity of another one, so really the solution here is to get physically higher update rate, above 300 fps preferably.

most of the time I see OR demos, they're running a game with pretty simple graphics (HL2 for example)

but if it's 60 or 120, it won't work with all ps4 games anyway. so I wonder what this product would be designed for. to be clear, VR doesn't work well with all games anyway. even if the game can run at the necessary framerate, it might just not be 'suited' for VR. it will really shine with games that were made with it in mind from the beginning. so I guess Sony could have some games specifically for it, but that seems to limit the overall potential of the product

LOL. Is it just me, or does it seem like these nikkas developed this kinda quick? Were they already working on this when they were announcing the PS4 last year? I don't know, I just have a feeling that this is about to be some thrown together, gimmicky bullshyt. I'd love to be wrong. But my gut feeling is that this is going to be bad.

Things aren't developed overnight. It's most likely this was beign developed for some time.

I like what they're trying to do but I have no faith in this and think it will be extremely niche. :yeshrug:They're gonna have to dump a bunch of money into demos and shyt just to even have a slight chance of this catching on. I'd rather see them throw that cash at exclusives for the the Quad and the Vita.

Not gonna get my hype up like the dudes over at GAF but I am looking forward to w/e they announce. I doubt it will be anything concrete, probably a concept, considering its GDC and E3 is around the corner.
