Sony’s Unannounced Sandbox Game Gets a Teaser Site; Announcement Coming Tomorrow

Today Sony Online Entertainment opened a new website for its unannounced project, apparently codenamed H1Z1. The website can be found here, and it shows just a rather eerie landscape for the moment.

President John Smedley mentioned on Twitter that the game will be fully unveiled with gameplay footage tomorrow.

He also clarified that we’ll be able to play it fully “soon,” seemingly indicating that we’re already quite close to the game’s release or beta.

Following Smedley’s previous hints, word on the street is that the title will be a post-apocalyptic survival horror sandbox MMORPG with plenty of zombies to slaughter. Smedley also went on record saying that those that loved the sandbox elements of the now defunct Star Wars Galaxies would appreciate the new game.

There’s still no word about the platforms, but if recent Sony Online Entertainment patterns are any indication it’ll probably head to PC first followed by PS4 after a while.

Sony Online Entertainment Revealing Major Project Tonight
What is H1Z1?

by Luke Karmali APRIL 9, 2014

Sony Online Entertainment, the studio behind EverQuest and Planetside 2, has launched a teaser site for it's next major project, ahead of an expected reveal tonight.

Currently being referred to as H1Z1, SOE president John Smedley explained via Twitter that "the new game we haven't announced" is set to be revealed tonight replete with gameplay footage at 5pm PT / 8pm ET / 1am GMT. All we have so far is a ghostly teaser site, suggesting the game may be rather spooky.

Further tweets from Smedley suggest a full release may not be too far off, as he wrote "You can play it yourself soon". While we don't know for certain what the game is about, the name is slightly reminiscent of H1N1, a strain of flu virus responsible for pandemics. The inclusion of the letter "Z" has led some to believe it's about a zombie outbreak.

Whatever it is, we'll find out soon enough. SOE has spoken before about an unannounced MMO it has in development, so it'll be interesting to see if tonight's reveal is in any way linked. Additionally, while we can assume a PC release is guaranteed, the company has appeared more and more interested in launching games on both PS3 and PS4, so a console release isn't out of the question.

The title of this thread says sandbox. While an MMO could be considered a sandbox game, I generally see a sandbox game as something you play offline like a GTA or Skyrim. When it goes online it becomes an MMO. I know GTA V is borderline somewhere in the middle, but I still feel the distinction should apply. In this case, if it is a sandbox game and not an MMO I'm interested to see what they've cooked up. If it's an MMO, I'm somewhat less interested.

H1Z1 is a post-apocalyptic MMO from Sony Online Entertainment, playable 'soon'

H1Z1 is a new post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online game from Sony Online Entertainment, SOE president John Smedley told Game Talk Live. The game will be playable "soon," Smedley wrote on Twitter.

Smedley revealed the game in an upcoming episode of the Game Talk Live podcast that's set to go live today at 8 p.m. ET. The publication's video interview will include a few minutes of early gameplay.

"H1Z1 is an MMO that allows players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor who is in a world that is filled with zombies," Smedley told Game talk Live. "A world! Not just a little tiny server."

Game Talk Live got a preview of the game in Smedley's office earlier this year, when zombie sounds weren't in the game and only one type of zombie existed.

In response to a question about whether we'd see more at the annual SOE Live event, following tonight's unveiling, Smedley wrote on Twitter that "you can play it yourself soon. and by play I mean play fully."

As he watched Smedley play H1Z1, podcast co-host Todd Roy noted that it's "scary." According to Smedley, there's a purpose behind that.

"That's the point," Smedley said. "When you see a zombie coming up to you with nothing out but a highway flare. But here is something your gonna be able to do that you can't do in these other games: Light things on fire. We are in the middle of putting that in so you are gonna be able to burn down trees, burn down stuff, and that's gonna be a lot of fun. The idea is that these players [are] building these forts and all of the sudden these other guys coming in lighting it on fire and waiting till they come out of the fortress ... is awesome."

A day and night cycle will also affect H1Z1, whose name brings to mind the real-life H1N1 swine flu virus.

"Oh God yeah," Smedley said when asked about day and night, "but in this game it matters a lot more than in others because it gets really dark at night and you need to have a torch and you will be ganked by other players, zombies. So we [have] vehicles in here. We can actually have aircraft if we want. Our goal is to build out this entire massive massive world that is this apocalypse of the United States."

SOE recently published a teaser site for the upcoming game, which featured only eerie background music, a full moon and foggy night landscape.

Make sure to check out Game Talk Live's podcast and interview with Smedley tonight at 8 p.m. ET. It will feature more details about the game, with Smedley at the helm playing an early build.
