His appeal is not necessarily his lyrical ability but his message in combination with his simplistic production. The song the departure is a great example. Thereβs no double entendres and whatnot, not crazy beat but a song like this is timelessJay Elec a great rapper and i don't know what people hearing. A Written Testimony a brilliant album. I do think a mystique and myth has been built up around him and he's become somewhat overrated due to that. From an MC skills stand point I've never understood when people elevate him as high as they do, but in terms of subject matter, poeticness and imagery he's incredible. Not saying he's not brilliant in terms of MC skills but people really put his skills in the top category i.e top 5 and stuff skill wise when to me at least he's not that level of an MC
I do wonder if he put out albums on the regular when the hype started how he'd do. Not sure his music would cross over to make him mainstream (not that it particularly matters). But there's difference between being loved by hardcore hip hop fans and having a 5 album run with a major label
