The boss Jackie was dying of cancer. Tony and Junior were basically underbosses and next in line. Junior was always in his brothers shadow (Tony's father) and felt it was his time. There was a whole lot of shyt boiling over (Tony preventing Junior killing some dude in arties restaurant, Tony protecting Chris and his friend when they were robbing trucks under Juniors protection, Tony basically still running shyt even though Junior was supposedly the boss, Tony making fun of Junior eating p*ssy, Junior finding out about Tony going to a shrink) Tony was about to kill Junior but the feds nabbed him before anything could be done. Tony let it slide and just took over all of his business. Tony's mother didn't have a major role but she knew about it and didn't have a problem with it. She was mad Tony put her in that nursing home. Plus she was overall miserable and crazy as fukk in general. Damn I miss the Sopranos

Junior was old school, he didn't really get Tony (just like Tony didn't really get Chris). Especially when that whole shrink thing popped up, his first thought was that Tone was a snitch. Nah breh, Tonys Mother had no knowledge of the plan to kill Tony. In fact if I can remember correctly she was old/naive and out of it when Junior was discussing it with her in the car and she thought he was talking about something completely different.

good. I've been hooked the last two weeks. I forgot how good this show was, the sex, the violence, the sarcasm

She did instigate the beef between Tony and Junior by telling him that Tony was seeing a shrink so Junior would kill him. Seeing a shrink is a sign of weakness and snitching, especially for a boss. If there was anything bad that happened she blamed it on Tony. Anybody on the outside looking in would never have guessed that was his mom.
She knew. She was the one who told Junior about all the capos mom being in the nursing home and he went ballastic saying "you know what I have to do" She only played dumb and senile to avoid repercussions but she was aware Junior planned a hit on Tony. Exactly. She was always snitching to Junior about Tonys business and instigating. She always made Tony's life hell and he put up with her even when her other two daughters left town. Those throwback scenes were crazy. You remember when she threatened to shove a fork in Tony's eye.
And she has no idea as to what junior was ACTUALLY talking about during those tapes. She was just responding like an old naive person with Alzheimers.

Yup. Livia was not senile at all. She was actually the one engineering the beef between Junior and Tony. She knew how to push both of their buttons. The last straw was when she told Junior that Tony was meeting with Johnny Sac and all his capos at the Retirement 'Community'. Basically making Junior Boss in name only and the biggest chump of all time.
At that point Junior didn't have a choice but to kill Tony.
His real enemy in that first season was not the gangsters, it was his own mother.
