Yeah, when an artist gets a plaque, it's legit since the labels really know how much an artist truly sells. Of course they want those soundscans to be nice, but like you said, not everyone reports their shyt to soundscan. I believe 50 Cents's GRODT went diamond but it shows soundscanning like 6 plus million.
also, whoever the issues the plaques goes on albums shipped not sold. i always mix it up but i think billboard counts what's sold & soundscan counts what's shipped.

that makes sense to do it that way, esp since you wouldn't know the sales numbers from every retailer.

Damn.

Good to see Schoolboy Q move close to 30,000 units independently with a limited physical release and little to no promotion.

Just TDE fans eating that shyt up

once they fix the bootlegging issue, things will be ok...

In the 90s, when bootlegging was rampant, Rap albums were going multi-platinum. :pachaha:

But, you're probably referring to cd burners in every comp and the wonderful creation of mp3s. :ahh:

Folks are in here are watching rap's popularity fade from the mainstream and refuse to believe it.

Now it's "300k is the new gold, rappers are still caking off tours, etc." and I start wondering if people are saying that about their favorite rappers just to make themselves feel better...

Look, all I want is good music to survive with a little bit of party music to keep things going. But let's be real. Rappers aren't signing 360 deals for the hell of it. The options are becoming more and more limited as the amount of people trying to get put on increases. Indie labels have to be just like majors now (without the huge pockets) in order to survive.

Rappers make the majority of money on tours but tours are also the most expensive form of income to run and maintain. And venues have smartened up and started demanding more upfront because they know artists NEED the tours to survive. And with so many artists "out on tour" now, everyone can't eat like that. There's only so much on the plate.

So front if you want, but the music industry is not what it used to be, no matter what people tell you. These rappers better enjoy what's left of the market. Rap is on its way out as the most popular thing going.

I do think there's a legit argument to say that sales dont necessairly reflect how popular the genre is though. Thanks to the net and just how fragmented stuff is there's probably more people aware of Hip-Hop than before despite lower sales (plus as you've said they go out more and promote in different ways)
As for the touring thing, its interesting though because while I'd be inclined to agree that the if more people take a share, the revenue shirnks from touring, it does seem that by giving more dates on tour they've sort matched demand by supply.
It would be a problem if tours werent selling out. From what I've read here and there the past few years, that's been a bigger problem for big arena tours rather than mid to small venue and Festival artists.
So I think you can survive touring as long as overheads are kept lower.
