This is what bothers me...

The Yankees don't owe Jeter shyt. They paid him over 265 million dollars in his career. What do they owe him?
You know what the Yankees owe? They owe it to their fans and to the players to put the best possible team on the field to win.
And if that means that some 40-year old SS has to swallow some pride because he's got no legs left to play defense and he OPS'es .615 (fukkin 38th among all SS), then the Yankees shouldn't start him every goddamn day.

Mantle and DiMaggio quit rather than suck.
But Derek's a leader, right?

:sas2:

He is a brand and he has probably made the Yankees quadrupled or 5 times what they've paid him..

And im sure they've made a pretty penny this year off this retirement run.. More than what they've paid him

I understand your point, but the Yankees needed Jeter for business and Jeter used his leverage in the situation.. It was bigger than baseball

Robinson Cano leaving made things even harder because he was expected to take jeter's place as the face of the franchise...

If Mantle and DiMaggio had those options, who's to say they wouldn't stay?

The Yankees don't need Jeter.
This is silly.

The Yankees have been a huge brand for 70 years before Jeter. They're going to be a huge brand 100 years after him.
But this is getting into 2 separate issues.

One is: Do you support playing a terrible player because he potentially earns you money on the back end, at the expense of the team?
Or: Do you play the best players in order to win?

Because here's the thing....
Losing teams hurt your ability to market and make money, too.

Always better to dump a guy/bench a guy too soon rather than too late.

Casual Fans identify with STAR PLAYERS who have STAR PERSONALITIES...Especially in the NBA/MLB.

The Yankee history is what makes them illustrious and what makes them money...which includes the faces of the franchise...

Jeter transcends baseball...

The Yankees can make the playoffs next year, but if they have no one the casual fan can identify with, they really might not make the money you would think...

New York is the city where stars are loved breh...Its just like that even at the expense of winning...

Casual Fans are doubled edged swords....:yeshrug:

Guaranteed NYY sells out the playoff tix if they get there next year.
Without Jeter.

He's meaningless in the overall picture.
Does anyone really think that his retirement hurts the Yankee brand in any way?

Is Forbes going to downgrade the net worth of the franchise next year without Jeter?

Steinbrenner(RIP) in his prime would have had nikkas crying..

I remember when he called Hadeki Irabu(RIP) a fat toad:deadrose:
Don't misquote the Boss

Wherever whores go.....
lol, what?

You actually think Girardi is a good manager?

:skip:

Whether you think Girardi is overrated is whatever. I mean, I think he does a good job but does micromanage too much

Jeter sucks we know. The offense was built terribly, not Giradis fault though

But seriously
An over the hill Kuroda? :skip:
I mean do you even watch games or even look at stats?

This year
He pitched 199 Innings
Had a 3.71 ERA, 1.13 WHIP
His 3 years as a Yankee

Kuroda was remarkably consistent these last three seasons — 2012-14 WHIP: 1.16, 1.16, 1.17; 2012-14 FIP: 3.86, 3.56, 3.58; 2012-14 K/BB: 3.27, 3.49, 3.91 — and he was truly one of the best pitchers in baseball, even with his late-season fades in 2012 and 2013. Here is where he ranks among his peers since joining New York (min. 300 IP, 131 qualifiers):

He's been no worse than a top 20 pitcher :dead:
Please stop talking out of your ass

CC Sabathia has never pitched less than 28 games in a season since his 2nd year :skip:
There was no way to expect a work horse lefty who's been a excellent pitcher to miss the entire season
Nova was never supposed to be a star. He's a solid cost controlled pitcher which the Yankees much needed
Tananka was arguably the best pitcher in baseball before getting injured

Pineda was pitching well before getting suspended and injured. But he finished with excellent numbers 1.93 ERA and a .857 WHIP

There is no way to plan for 4 out of 5 pitchers getting injured for prolonged periods. Infact I don't think thats every happened

Kuroda was lame. Saved by a 3.16 ERA in the 2nd half, boosted largely by a relatively weak schedule.
CC Sabathia has been in decline for 2 years and everyone knew it...more than that, they EXPECTED it given his weight and the mileage on his arm. His workload was bound to catch up to him and it has.
Nova wasn't expected to be a star...except by people who follow the team and by members of the organization:

Tanaka was a mystery going into the season. They knew he'd be good, but nobody knew how good.
And he went down and was overused by Girardi. Great managing.
I got $100 says Tanaka won't finish the 2015 season without hitting the DL. That elbow is on borrowed time and you know it.

You can keep drinking that kool aid, breh

Calls someone over the hill when they been a top 20 pitcher the last 3 years :dead:
Completely ignore stats when you been proven wrong

Your such a lame @Raul. Can't admit your wrong
How is Kuroda a top 20 pitcher?
Who cares about 3 years ago?

We're talking about 2014.

Three years ago Jacoby Ellsbury was putting up Mike Trout numbers.

:mjlol:

You want points because Kuroda was a mediocre pitcher for a mediocre team with several holes?

Cal Ripken Jr didn't have 3 "final days" at Camden Yards.

and Ripken switched positions.
