It isn't. Diet and profession is. During the colonial era, you know how disgusting and low Indians thought white people were? Because they ate beef. Even the lowest Indian peasant thought himself superior to his British landlord, not because of skin colour but because of diet. This used to enrage the British who naturally thought they were superior because of white supremacy, but Indian social order doesn't work that way.

Discrimination against Africans in India today is based again on diet. They think black people are cannibals obviously that's disgustingly racist but it isn't strictly about skin colour

There's a skin colour issue but it's not that deeply linked to caste, especially not in the south where most people regardless of caste are dark skinned. I'm from the south. I'm from the top ranking caste. I have lots of dark skinned relatives. Nobody gives a fukk about their skin. On the other hand if they found out I love beef, that would not be cool AT ALL. Certain places in India you'll do ten year bids for slaughtering a cow.

The determining factor of caste is not skin colour, but adherence to the principle of ahimsa, which means non-violence. You can look like Wesley Snipes or like Britney Spears and none of that matters if you aren't a vegetarian who practices non-violence. Lower castes are thought of as violent because they consume meat, the outcastes lowest of all because they eat beef.

You're right about skin color, but caste is about ancestry, not diet.

A lot of North Indian Brahmins eat meat, and historically Kshatriyas ate meat too, beef included.

If you are Indian then you know what the Ramayana is. During their forest exile, Rama and Lakshmana hunted and killed animals for food. Vegetarianism became the cultural norm in South India and Gujurat because of Buddhist and Jain influence.
