If I was the suspect's lawyer, I would point to the fact that she doesn't have a criminal history, and make up a story something like:

"the shooter had a abusive relationship in her past where her ex-boyfriend would treat her less than dirt and spit on her. It even made her nearly suicidal. She made a promise to herself that she would never let anyone treat her like that again. When Alexandria spit on her that fateful day, something just snapped and she reverted back to those dark days. The court should show some leniency"

I would then try to point to how the constant bombardment of news from all sources, and constant notifications on our phones talking about how violent the world is, pushed me to get one (then again, I'm speaking from a New Yorker standpoint, where it's more difficult to get a legal gun). It might be easy as hell to get one in South Carolina. I guess it depends on how good of a lawyer she can get.
