The Midwest suffers from basically being a hybrid and mixing the styles of what was popular in the South and West Coast, especially during the 90s.
East, West, and South all have their own distinctive sounds, unlike the Midwest, which often gets mistaken as the South, for example, 3-6 Mafia, 8Ball & MJG, etc, are often thought of as Southern Hip-Hop.

I don’t know about “now” but Southern Hip Hop from the 80s to 2010-2012ish were the best years.
