Because the giu who played Spartacus in season 1 had chemo so instead of just canceling the show they did a mini series prequel
Then season 3 they replaced the Spartacus actor and picked up where season 1 left off

The prequel itself isn't a season; they put the second season on hold. Vengeance is the second season.
