My uncle got married two weeks ago and did it at city hall, then had a backyard BBQ with like 20 close friends and family.
I was just having this discussion with my lady a few days ago. Her younger sister got married young. Both her and the groom were young and mostly broke, but she wanted a high end wedding. Long story short, it caused alot of grief for all parties involved.
My lady thought it was too much, especially since they weren't established and didn't even have money for a honeymoon. I thought the same.
I said they should've had a small ceremony at the church they grew up going to, which was across the street from their parents house. Then had a a big barbeque as the reception. They could've even had the city shut down theie street and had a block party. Then they would've had money for a really nice honeymoon and some left over for a nice spot to live in.
Or they could've held the reception at a high end steakhouse. Rented one of the rooms and had the close family there for a great meal. Still would've been pretty cheap for a great experience, especially in comparison to renting a hall, buying/preparing food,
Me, when I get married, I plan on having a destination wedding on an island. Flat cost and they take care of everything at a reasonable price. You get high end treatment and a built-in honeymoon at a great resort.
