I'd like Spike to explain why he was such a egotistical dikk that he kept giving himself plum roles in his own movies that could have gone to black actors who were looking for a break.
Aside from She's Gotta Have It there is no reason why Spike Lee was in full co-star roles in all of his flicks up to the 2000s besides ego.

It is his right as the creator to star and or co-star in his own movies if he feels he is right for the role. An auteur’s work is an expression of self just as much as it is an art piece for a wide audience. Spike, in this way, has oaved the way for other black auteurs such as Donald Glover, Issa Rae, and Jerrod Carmichael to write, direct, and star in their own projects.

Spike Lee could have cast a young black American actor looking for a break to play the parts Spike played in Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, School Daze, Jungle Fever, Mo Betta Blues etc.

At least the big British actors have that true from stage to screen background. I've never seen anyone give receipts that AA actors don't go to acting school
