It is weird. There's a story where Monica talks about having to re-record what would become her sophomore album because her voice changed in the middle of recording. Maybe that had something to do with it.

This song might've been intended for the soundtrack, but didn't make the cut for whatever reason:

^^^ Sounds more fitting for Waiting to Exhale than Space Jam

that's plausible, i was always confused on how that ended up on space jam. at least "i believe i can fly" had the whole motivational angle, there wasn't a love component to the movie

one thing that hit me tho, all those artists they put on there and didn't have monica do a track, that's weird, maybe there were label politics at play.

were brandy & monica ever on the same soundtrack back then??

played that album two days straight just last week, not a weak link on there :justwow: it's clearly the GOAT r&b soundtrack, and i'd even say GOAT soundtrack period. babyface showed the fukk out. one thing that hit me tho, all those artists they put on there and didn't have monica do a track, that's weird, maybe there were label politics at play.

Monica was too young.
They wanted grown women singing them songs on there (save for the track with Chante Moore just getting her Bobby McFerrin on).

Anyway, "No Diggity" is probably the biggest of them all, but "Pony" changed the world.

brandy was on there...cmon son. and monica had a grown woman voice and music, more grown than brandy. monica woulda lit up any song put in front of her. i'm going to say it was label politics (or maybe not wanting brandy and monica on the same soundtrack).

breh, it's not like there is a huge sample size. i remember brandy on set it off and waiting to exhale, monica on space jam and nutty professor, not sure how many other soundtracks they appeared on. and no other soundtrack was as heavily r&b as this (maybe best man), let alone a collection of all women - many of whom were the biggest names in the genre.
