Should a Hip Hop album have to be a certain age to be considered Classic?

A simple factor like 'sounding dated' in some way can make a difference long term.

I say 5 years.

You want to know a secret? All classics are personal classics. Nothing more.

If you want it to be classic then it is. If you don't want to be classic then it isn't

5 years is a little to recent to consider something a classic, I would say 10-20 years.

How well the album aged can help determine a classic but many other factors go into it also. Run-D.M.C I would consider a classic hip-hop album because of the influence it had but it sounds very dated if you listen to it now.

I think when considering an album for classic status the most important thing is the influence the album had on the sound of hip-hop. Waiting 10-20 years can help you determine the influence had

The problem isn't how long you wait to call something a classic it's that cats these days especially are quick to say an album is either classic or complete trash. It's like there's no in between, like you can't just have a good album anymore

shyts different in the digital age. Hell, even the way we perceive time between albums is different.

There was a time where we had two magazines telling us what albums were classic, on top of looking at stuff like sales and how the album changed the landscape.

Going by the old criteria, the last actual classic albums were GKMC and My Beautiful Dark Fantasy. nikkas hate it, but IMHO, Flockaveli.

Nowadays, though, stuff like sales and reviews don't mean shyt. It's all subjective.

So is a time limit.

Like Watch The Throne. I can't recall anyone calling it classic per se but some people hailed it as pure genius at the time. Now.. it seems like a mere memory.

There's no age limit, often I can tell when I first heard a record, sometimes hit can grow on you into a classic when you find it gets better or still holds up, but there's not official limit.

It just depends. I knew certain albums were classics the first time I heard them and some it took a few years for me to acknowledge. I real classic has to be something that's timeless and fans and critics can both agree on
