The Staten Island railway is technically part of the subway system and uses the same trains as the A train. Long Island = L literally

Brooklyn and queens are on long Island. Long Island is pretty much defined by county. Brooklyn/Kings and queens are counties like how Nassau and Suffolk are. just like the Bronx is the only Boro that's attached to new york state. New York city is 5 counties that they call boros. (New york county is boro of the manhattan island. Kings county is the boro of brooklyn queens county is the boro of queens. Bronx county is the boro of the Bronx and Richmond County is the boro of staten Island.
