Gone are the days in America where soccer is only a headline every 4 years. Soccer is on the brink of becoming a top 3 sport in America with establishment of MLS and the Barclay's Premier League being broadcasting on a major American network coming in August. MLS average attendance has overtaken NHL, MLB & NBA games with the potential of reaching American football attendance levels.

There is A TON of money to be made and the cost of learning the game is minimal(contrary to popular belief. If you have any talent, scouts will come find you and you won't have to spend a dime for pay for play training).Like basketball, fundamental technique can be learned by just purchasing a ball and practicing on dribbling, ball control, passing and shooting. These skills are 50% of the game so the only thing a person would have to worry about is finding a competent coach & team that can teach a person how to play the game and utilize their skills. Sadly, there aren't a lot of quality coaches in America yet but the tide is changing and as I mentioned, if you have the talent, scouts will come from far corners of the earth to develop you. The money is great now, especially in Europe, where most of the money is made. Great players make Kobe/LeBron/MLB money with their team contract, then make beaucoup money with endorsement deals. You will have income streams from around the world...... and still have an untapped US market. I would estimate in 20 years, MLS will be a profitable league that will be generating billions of dollars(the CBA is being renegotiated soon, but the market won't be free). Low end net worth should be 100 million..... High end... 500 million-1 billion. There are also leagues all over the world, so as long as your not flabby & sick or not terrible, you'll have a job.

Travel is another perk.... You will see, live and travel to the most beautiful(and ugly)places on Earth and will be paid to do it. Brazil, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Russia, Japan.... Possibilities are endless.

Soccer... a top 3 sport in America in 25 years.... it has already begun.

If I could do it all over again, I would have stayed with soccer and got PAID. I was a RB growing up and I was pretty damn good plus it kept me in shape. The problem for me was I lived in Oklahoma(look it up)where American football is king. Also, matches weren't available on T.V. and lack of a formal league, so I had little exposure(There was a pro team in Tulsa, but the league went under in 1984(I was 2 years old). I ended up growing to 5'11... Too short for American Football and Basketball, but perfect for soccer plus I had explosive athleticism.

Lack of exposure and teams where I live plus peer pressure sealed my fate. I f**ked up....

This is all feel good stuff, but the fact of the matter is that football and basketball keep draining the most explosive athletic young boys, and US soccer would suffer for that.

Even that isnt as big as a deal, the US has plenty of young talent to go around, but the big European clubs have farm systems from the jump. Cats like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, were discovered and in training regimens at age 6-7, with schooling becoming secondary.

When you have players for say, Spanish national team, being trained in the
Barcelona farm system from youth and coming up together, playing with each other against better and better competition - and then, out of all that, picking out the cream of the crop, it results in what Spain just pulled off :wow:

Back to back to back titles at major tournaments.

MLS competition levels simply dont come close to La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A. its like someone hooping in the Netherlands and deciding he's ready to face NBA talent. Dirk Nowitzkis are rare.

Not surprising with all the Latinos in the US now. It was a matter of time.
Don't think it'll be a top 3 covered sport tho. NFL, CFB, NBA, MLB are hard to overtake coverage wise.

MLS has a long way to go

Many teams are still losing money and the TV ratings are putrid despite the introduction of DPs

Demograpic shifts will have an impact but I dont see soccer improving its standing much until the MLS can put forth a better product especially when you consider how quickly they are trying to expand. They need proper player development but I dont know how it can be done quickly since in the US athletes tend to develop themselves in a very decentralized system while players in other countries enter academies at a very young age.

Hopefully some of the big clubs in europe follow man city's example and take a stake in a franchises like nyfc. If they can start development academies here like man city is doing then that could speed boost quality play in the league.
