MLS has a long way to go

Many teams are still losing money and the TV ratings are putrid despite the introduction of DPs

Demograpic shifts will have an impact but I dont see soccer improving its standing much until the MLS can put forth a better product especially when you consider how quickly they are trying to expand. They need proper player development but I dont know how it can be done quickly since in the US athletes tend to develop themselves in a very decentralized system while players in other countries enter academies at a very young age.

Hopefully some of the big clubs in europe follow man city's example and take a stake in a franchises like nyfc. If they can start development academies here like man city is doing then that could speed boost quality play in the league.

You only place blame on MLS and owners that insist on wasting the DP tag money bringing in players that only want to come play in America when no one in Europe wants them. There have been some good signings and there have been terrible signings.

Not worried about the ratings, they will come.

It's gonna take take to develop coaches that are tactically on the same level as European and South American coaches, but eventually it will happen. Everyone realizes that it takes time to build a La Maisa, Ajax or even a AZ Alkmaar like training program. Steps are being made and footy IQ is growing.

RB = Right Back(in soccer)

Basketball and Football teams have a preference for players 6'0 or over(unless you are the punter/kicker or RB). NFL players are between 6'0-6'6 average, especially in the trenches where a 6'2-6'3 lineman is common. Dwight Freeney is the shortest (defensive)lineman I can think of.. He's 5'11 and an anomaly. Defensive backs can't consistently cover 6'3-6'4 WR's. In basketball, 6'0 is the minimum height.... Chris Paul comes to mind.... PG's under 6'0 hardly get drafted let alone play.

Now with soccer, height can be an advantage but it isn't necessary. Some of the greatest players are under 5'9 with the great player of this generation being 5'6. 5'7 to 5'11 soccer players = :eat:

Let me just put this to bed.....

50-100 million dollars(average) or being 2nd or 3rd point guard on the bench of a NBA team and being a RB in the NFL that may be successful enough to see the big pay or may just be a one down back.

OP, not completely on subject but did you just say you are 5'11 and undersized for a RB
:childplease:

Otherwise I agree with some points while disagreeing with others.
:yeshrug:

I watch more soccer now than any other sport collectively over the year. Despite this, I know soccer will never break the top 3 in the American living room. Baseball, Basketball and Football are just too big. Now, the sport that Soccer did catch over the past 10 years was Hockey; credit some of that to lockouts, but it caught and passed Hockey as America's #4 sport

As someone pointed out earlier, the farm systems of these EURO Leagues are too strong to even think the MLS can compete. Its not that US kids are not playing soccer(I will throw out numbers later) its the level of coaching+competition. You can have millions playing a sport, but if they all suck and have no coaching, it wont matter.

What soccer needs to concentrate on is the transition age. That age between 12-16. While the inner city blacks dont play soccer at all, an introduction to that demographic could cause a major change. Why, because we don't have that 'USA Black Soccer Superstar' that Soccer needs.

To say that Soccer isn't popular in the US is a lie. Soccer is indeed growing, just look at this:

Soccer amongst the youth is the 2nd largest sport. Over 14 million kids were playing soccer by 2008. That only trailed basketball at 26 million. It actually overtook baseball(11 million) who's numbers are declining as compared to decades ago. All this data can be found here

Like I said, soccer will never dethrone any of the Big 3, and thats even with baseballs decline. But if it is to makeup ground. We do need that Superstar Black Striker from the USA that has to be considered one of the best, if not the best in the world

Running backs and DB's in the NFL are the only positions that a person compared to any other position can be undersized but they are not preferred. Some of the best NFL running backs are 5'11..... Tony Dorsett, Earl Campbell and Terrell Davis. Those are anomalies.... There's isn't enough rosters spots in the NFL for every black male between 5'7 -5'11 to have a job and players like Adrian Peterson, Walter Payton and OJ Simpson don't grown on trees because if there was... All of the taller RB's would be taken in a draft over the smaller players..... There are very few successful players under 5'9. Barry Sanders..... the biggest NFL anomaly ever.......

:what:

You are talking to someone who played RB in college at 5'9 1/2. Now if your making a point that RB's have gotten shorter, then yes, you are correct

My nikka you are 5'11. At 5'11, if your good, you can play any position in the NFL outside of Oline. The top 10 RB's last year in the NFL(Yards) only averaged to 5'10. And thats the NFL, if we look at college it drops an inch. If you ask any Pro Scout the ideal measurements for a RB he will tell you 5'10/5'11 for reasons if I even have to explain, it will tell me you aren't that knowledgeable on the game. I can't believe someone not under 5'7 made this comment
:snoop:
I would expect it from them, but not a nikka thats 5'11.

MLS is only 14 years old.. It'll get there:ehh:

-plus the kids in the hood are starting to realize that there's money in soccer. If you're supremely athletic but not gifted in size and height there's another sport out there for you. Why be a "Rudy" and ride the bench when you don't have to:manny:
