From the "Headsprung" thread:

Timbo :wow:

swear this nikka got some many bangers with nikkas spittn nonsense over em :francis:

so when thecoli asks "wheres tim's hip hop classics?"......:francis:

he got them its just...:francis:

That's where Tim gets overrated...too much struggle rhyming on his joints

what fukks me up is tim will give absolute heat to sub-par nikkas, then get with somebody like Nas or Jada and fumble like shyt..partly cause they go to him for clear cut top 40 shyt..but still

This is an interesting thought, that is not without some merit...

Tim has given heat to some of the greatest of all-time:

Nas
Jay Z
LL
Snoop Dogg
Magoo (don't fight me, niccas.)
Westside Connection
Beanie Sigel
Jadakiss
Ludacris
Li'l Kim
Fabolous
Pastor Troy

...but we can see they have not been some of their greatest work. What of this? What does this say for Timbalands' standing in the game? Discuss.

to me the best work Tim has done is mostly on the R&B side..ive never been a big fan of his production style like that anyways so it all depends on the artist

for instance the best he's ever done IMO is the beat for nikka What, nikka Who..and both Jay and Jaz-O ripped that shyt to shreds

i see what you're saying but tim's sound is banger oriented so the spitting has to go with the beat mostly without being anything special...

Completely agree. But the Tim and Jay ratio is too hit or miss.

With that CLASSIC that was "Nicca What, Nicca Who?" you got:

"Lobster & Scrimp" = cool
"Paper Chase" = ehhh
"It's Hot" = ehhh
"Snoopy Track" = TRASH
"Big Pimpin'" = CLASSIC
"Is That Yo' Chick" = CLASSIC
"Hey Papi" = had to grow on me
"Too Many Hoes" = cool
"What They Gonna Do" = should not have happened
"Dirt Off Your Shoulder" = should not have happened
"Holy Grail" = should not have happened
"Drunk In Love" = yuck

his best stuff is rnb.

He's got some hip hop classics. His stuff with Jigga era Hov is classic. He's got some strong material with Luda. His work on Tha Last Meal is top level. The Missy stuff was dope. But he gave a lot of heat to subpar rappers and not as much dope stuff to the likes of Nas.

U Owe Me is a classic record though b. To this day, it goes off. U Owe Me and Pony go hard in the club - to this day. FACTS.

Quietest kept, his top 5 hip hop record he was on ghost co-production for Devante. 2Pac - No More Pain

The thing with Timbaland is that most rappers went to Timbaland for club records or Top 40 reaches and that's exactly what they got. A lot of them were out of their element because that wasn't their lane. So yeah, Bubba Sparxxx, Missy Elliott, and Petey Pablo, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Justin Timberlake, and Nelly Furtado got the best out of Tim because

1) He played to their strengths

2) He was able to play to their strengths because they tapped him for more than just a single. He did multiple songs or helmed the album.

And he proved more than capable of doing more than a club record or a typical single:

^^^ a record like this doesn't make the album, but the Sean Paul record does :snoop:

Turtle Island to DXB
Timb's beats are more for the club, college marching band covers and R&B. Not for lyricists like producer Primo, QuestLove, Organized Noize. Neither is he nostalgic like Dr Dre, DJ Pooh, Kanye circa 00s, or 9th Wonder. Kinda hard to categorize. Always thought his raps and beats were corny.

timbaland shyt for r&b >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> his shyt for hip hop

he came up under the devante swing umbrella and while timbaland's style of production was more piano laced like devante's, after learnin' a lot from devante, timbaland made more beats tailored for r&b IMO than he did hip hop. i always fukked with his r&b shyt more than hip hop, even though what he doin' is hip hop beats, it's just the shyt he did fo the r&b records he produced always worked better than his shyt for hip hop records IMO

like take a listen to these

I'd argue the bullshyt hip-hop tracks Tim produced aren't bullshyt because of his production, rather the rapper did some lazy shyt over the beat.

Here's the problem with hip hop production in general. You have beat makers and then you have producers. Tim I'm sure has 300-500 beats tracked out somewhere, and when artist A just wants a Tim track that's a club banger or a girl song, artist A didn't actually sit in the studio with Tim. They worked through email 1000 miles away from each other.

The best productions are when the artist and producer are in studio together. Yeah it's more time consuming, but you get a more cohesive product, bottom line.
