I was 19 when she died. I found out late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. When I went to bed that night and woke up, I was hoping it was a bad dream...it wasn't. :to:

I had a huge crush on Aaliyah since like 6th grade. For that reason, her death was sadder to me than both Pac and Big.

It was sad and even though I like Aaliyah I got over it pretty quick. :manny:
My girl was crying though.

yea. they pretty much threw a machine behind her death and geesed the youngns into thinking she was the next whitney when she was really just the '90s ciara.

Dumbest post i've read this month. :wow:

The ******* in the game now would sell their souls to be Aaliyah.:rip:

Detroit/Los Angeles
I was listening to her the album she released weeks prior heavily. Then came the news that she passed in a plane crash. Radio was playing "Rock The Boat" and a lot of her older material. I discovered a lot of remixes and songs that I didn't even know existed prior to her passing.

They OD'ed on "Rock The Boat"...which I thought was a kind of a mediocre song, for Aaliyah anyway.

yea. they pretty much threw a machine behind her death and geesed the youngns into thinking she was the next whitney when she was really just the '90s ciara.

A lot of people refuse to believe that.

Obviously, being from Detroit, a bigger deal was made of it here (I'd imagine). They played "Rock The Boat" like crazy on the radio and people were selling her as a legend.

One of the more subtle things I remember about that time (I was a sophomore in high school) was that I was just as much of a rock fan as I was a hip-hop fan and not too long before her crash, MTV was running System of a Down's latest single, "Chop Suey" (from Toxicity). The song had a line "I cry...when angels deserve to die", and I remember thinking "Damn. They're probably going to pull this video." :ohhh:

Not too long after, 9/11 happened and obviously, that became the bigger plane crash story so Aaliyah's death more or less got temporarily thrown in the bushes but people here were still taking it hard. Lots of Aaliyah memorial sketches in the office, people posting pictures of her and the "Rock The Boat" song on their Blackplanet pages, and "Queen of The Damned" hype.

I always thought that she had some good "JAMS", but people used to say things like "Beyonce wouldn't have blown up if Aaliyah was still alive"...which is absurd b/c Aaliyah didn't exactly have an extra powerful voice. I always figured Ciara was the closest thing to filling her shoes but when people have allegiance to the dead, they hold firm to their beliefs. :manny:

Respected her work & style though. She'd probably still have her mid-card lane if she were still alive.

I was real hurt by it. Didnt cry, didnt effect me like pac, mike or whitney. But the fact that we were both born in 1979 and she seemed so sweet, kinda fukked with me,like damn WHY HER.
She's one of the many that symbolizes my highschool days.

when i found out the cause of the plane crash was her overweight security i was :heh:

but RIP to her it was so unexpected, and like someone said the events of 9/11 kind of negated feelings of who died

whats your problem? thats how i found out about her death. what makes you think that it isnt?

and it took me a minute to figure out who she was talking about. so by the time i found out, my brain was too winded to process sympathy right away.

the way i found out about left eye's death makes for a funny story as well but i felt instant sympathy despite of it. that chit hurt.
