They werent what they are now though. They had to be built into that over time. Your point about being an upstart 3rd team is true. But you win ring in LA its "Lakers got 17". You bring the first bball chip to NY since fukkin Nixon and you are a legend. Maybe not surpassing the Knicks...yet but still solid in the biggest city.

Almost no NBA team was what it was today, because the NBA wasn't what it was. The NFL wasn't either. Both were behind MLB. It took the Lakers-Celtics dynasties/rivalry and Jordan to make the NBA what it is (after Doc and the merger kept it alive).

The other thing is in LA the Lakers would be your only real competition in pro sports. NY has the Knicks, Giants and Yankees. The Yankees are bigger than any NFL team not owned by Jerry Jones.

But all of this is unlikely because the league wouldn't go for 3 teams in a city, even at that city size. It's a financially cannabilistic endeavor.
