In @observe thread there was the idea that you can get back to your roots by learning an African language. Would you want to know which African language specifically?

I can't remember her name but there was an actress who did the test and turns out she's from Ghana.

Basically DNA ancestry looks to your genes and can trace back your origins. I'm African and I have been tempted just out of curiosity.

Of course..I hit my aunt up on Facebook last year for her blood..I have to go thru my Aunts cuz my pops passed a few years ago, so it's impossible to get his DNA..I'd rather do my black side of the family first instead of getting myself examined so it would be less confusing..then after I'll get my mom's DNA..

Genetic ancestry testing, or genetic genealogy, is a way for people interested in family history (genealogy) to go beyond what they can learn from relatives or from historical documentation. Examination of DNA variations can provide clues about where a person’s ancestors might have come from and about relationships between families. Certain patterns of genetic variation are often shared among people of particular backgrounds. The more closely related two individuals, families, or populations are, the more patterns of variation they typically share.

Do you see it a bit like testing for illnesses you may carry (that sounds very wrong) but I mean it in the sense that not knowing doesn't change anything but getting new information might make you start asking questions and force you to redefine yourself or your identity?

If I tested my maternal side and got an answer I didn't want to get I'd be gutted.

What are you talking about? Illnesses? No I'm testing to see where I came from..

lol I knew you'd misunderstand even as I wrote it. What I mean is, what if it gives you the answer you didn't want to get?

I am illogically proud about my ancestry, if I were to find out that say my mum's side was actually from somewhere else, different to what I know now I wouldn't be very happy about that. So I'd rather not know that what I think is actually inaccurate.

I'm gonna do this after I graduate this summer. I know my immediate family are from Jamaica and Nigeria but it'd be interesting to see where else we come from. I know my great great grandmother was white so I won't be surprised to see some Scottish come up.
