what do you think of the new DTG (Direct to Garment) printing machines that are popping up everywhere. Is it similar to what you were doing
They're not worth it IMO. they're expensive as hell and real picky as ro what kind of shirts you can run through them. for example if you want to print on dark t's you have to spray some special shyt on the shirt first.
screen printing would be my first choice but if you're talking low runs like 1-20 shirts you could also try thermoflex. it's a vinyl material that you need a plotter to cut your design out. you can't do photos with it but 1-3 color designs work fine. then you just need a heat press to press the design on the shirt. plus you can use the plotter with regular vinyl to make decals, banners, signs etc. so let's say someone wants like some family reunion shirts you can up sell a banner to go along with the shirts.
As far as photo printing you can use what op used and get yourself an Epson printer and a heat press. you can get a decent 13x19 printer for less $200. Heat press probably like 800-1200. you can get one for a few hundred bucks but IMO you don't want to skimp on the heat press it'll just lead to headaches down the road. if you're just making shirts for yourself as a hobby then a cheap heat press would probably be fine.
