What was your major/specialty in college? Don't most business "fail" first two years? Couldn't things have picked up by year five?

what do you think of the new DTG (Direct to Garment) printing machines that are popping up everywhere. Is it similar to what you were doing

LOOOOL breh get your facts straight, have you heard of a company called tspring. I know people in that industry who have made millions creating t-shirts and selling on facebook . All you need is Facebook marketing skills and a designer

How a T-shirt company snared a whopping $58 million

How Your T-Shirt Can Make You Rich

Teespring, one of the top T-shirt sellers in the U.S., printed more than 7 million shirts last year. Hundreds of people like Hsu and Springer made more than $100,000 in 2014 selling tees through the company’s site; 20 collected more than $1 million, according to Chief Executive Officer Walker Williams.

- I had a storefront about a decade ago where we customized and made t-shirts primarily, but we also made license plates, mugs, dog tags, but we never really made any of that shyt, it was primarily t-shirts.

- I'm African American, a bulk of my clientele was also African American; my small staff was African American as well

- I FAILED. i'm not about to sit up here and act like I ran an empire and we made tons of $$$ and bought cars and shyt, we FAILED and ran a FAILED business for 3 whole years. the last year was a complete nightmare

-i've always wanted to talk about my experience running this business but I never really know where to start, so I'm doing a little AMA

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON HOW TO START A BUSINESS, GET A LOAN, WHAT TO DO, WHAT NOT TO DO - ASK AWAY:

(proof i ain't lying, I got into an argument w/a cat on BGOL years ago about being a small business owner and made this t-shirt for proof that I knew wtf i was talking about)

@thatdude901

- my major was political science
yes. most small businesses fail within 2 years. we failed earlier than that but rent was so damn cheap we stayed in it..

How did you hear about the loans in the first place?

- i was a tag a long. but this was one of those "fine print" situations, where they didn't broadcast the shyt on the radio or put fliers up
you had to catch wind of this or somebody had to tell you. now I bet if you just google minority and women business loans they're still out there, and trust me - they WANT to give them away, just have your shyt together and you'll get it

- something is better than nothing, but that's not a lot of money, trust me especially if you want to open a store front

gotta keep the lights on, phone bill paid up (gotta have a business line), inventory has to be re-stocked, supplies - and you won't hit your goal every month

especially starting out, so you need to pay some of those costs w/that loan money, you need at least 40K IMO...

- nah man. the t-shirt business will NEVER go away, people from all walks of life will always want t-shirts man
its a recession proof job man, believe that.

it's an upgrade to what I was doing...SILK SCREEN is still king though, that's where the real money is if you have time and resources, plus the t-shirt designs look better

- you can make a killing doing silk screen, the problem is that you can't do 1 or 2 shirts like with DTG or with what I was doing - the big t-shirt company here was always throwing business my way b/c we could do just a few shirts whereas with silk screen you have to do like 50 at a time, no small orders.

we looked them up one day and they were a 5 million dollar a year business

- no, because we weren't making any money. if we were doing big numbers, yeah. we'd have had to pay out the ass.

when you own a business there's so much little dumb shyt you have to worry about
like music; did you know if you go into a small business and they're playing licensed music they could get sued if they haven't contacted ASCAP or BMI/EMI?

fukk all that man, until you start making major money do your thing. many would disagree w/that but trust me, nobody is even thinking about your ass unless you're a threat or at least poised to make a lot of money.

I feel like this business would be more successful these days with shyt like dad hats with random shyt on it and t shirts with random vintage movie posters/album covers on them

You'd prolly make a killing selling it online and not have to worry about a storefront:wow:

bingo. you've got the right idea IMO

when i had my store i'd be terrified to do something like this...but look at this shyt here, who's coming to "SUE" these people? i bet in his city he's making a killing off of these

on the flipside: i get on facebook and see these bootleg pages selling movie franchise merchandise, they'll have 100k likes!!...some page was selling 5 heartbeats t-shirts and going viral

robert townsend got on Twitter and said he was not affiliated nor had he signed off on that page - pretty sure he contacted his lawyers over that shyt.

it's a risk, but isn't that what being in business is all about? :yeshrug:

These type of loans don't exist anymore. OP got it in 06 before the crash and regulation came through.

Back then hookers were getting mortgages for 600k. different world at the time
