I think cold approaching is fine as long as you're not being rude or pushy. Gym is fine preferably when leaving, grocery store is fine, regular stores are fine (apart from when I'm in the underwear/lingerie section

Usually yelling stuff like, "Hey shawty/gorgeous, What's going on, You belong to somebody?, whistling etc" aren't the hit though.
