The Passage of Time
Xbox Controller is still using ERM(eccentric rotating mass) What this means is that as you turn up the voltage, these motors spin faster and make more vibration. Ultimately, developers have only a single number to adjust for each motor, and this number changes both the frequency and the strength of the vibration. This is great because it’s easy to make simple effects, especially if developers are looking for a rumble sensation. However, effects that are subtle, sharp, or high bandwidth are simply not possible with this hardware.

Xbox Controller Teardown

"Looking at the the base of the bottom enclosure, we have two ERM (Eccentric Rotating Mass) vibration motors. These provide haptic feedback to the player and connect to the PCBA through PH-style connectors. The off-set masses are different sizes, so the player can differentiate between feedback coming from the right and from the left."

"The triggers in the Xbox One controller are also much more sophisticated. They have embedded ERM vibration motors inside for even higher fidelity haptic feedback."

These motors have been in the Dual Shock since the beginning of rumble.

Nintendo uses LRA(Linear Resonant Actuators) which instead of spinning like the ERM, it slides back and forth and it more precise and it speeds up and stops a little better. This is HD haptics.

The Dual Sense uses Voice-Coil Actuators that are highly programmable and uses sound wave like a a speaker. These motors enabled developers to control both frequency and strength independently as well as create subtle and sharp sensations.

Haptics in Gaming: Coming of Age | Immersion - Haptic Technology

Given all these new degrees of freedom, game developers will need to foster a new skill in their teams: haptic designer. Somewhat similar to a sound designer, a haptic designer is responsible for creating the control signals that drive deep immersion and bring the game experience to life with powerful tactile feedback. The combination of HD motors and haptic triggers means that each game controller has 4 high-bandwidth effect slots that must be synced up with game audio and animations. Tool developers such as Unity and Unreal – as well as Sony’s native developer tools – need to offer much more sophisticated content creation tools to allow these experiences to be explored and delivered to players.

Controller Haptics – Sense the impact of shots, passes, catches, kicks, tackles, and hits with immersive controller haptics. A new DualSense controller on PlayStation®5 with rich and responsive haptic feedback deepens the gameplay experience letting you feel the rhythm of the game in your hands.

This and the 3D Audio are the two immersion features I want to check out the most.

Especially, since I feel they won’t be easily convey through watching videos of others using it. It going to be something you have to experience firsthand.

Yup same here.

The audio is what I'm most hyped about from sony and the input latency from microsoft.

I feel like the PS5 will feel like the most obvious next gen console simply due to the controller, system design and exclusives. Xbox Series X uses the same interface, sameish controller and no 1st party exclusives.
