Those features are unrealistic.Those giant eyes and purple eyes or w/e. To them, they see the characters as "Japanese" just as some people will see someone like Sonic the Hedghehog as white or Marge Simpson as white.
I'd say it's a mixture of western impact after WWII, and other things such as them viewing darker skinned people as peasants since they were out in the sun working while the rich stayed indoors.

No its because they really see Japanese people. In anime I see whites, they see Japanese. Read the following:

And as someone who teaches in SE Asia, its the Fillipinos and the Chinese who are far more obsessed with being white than the Japanese. And there are more than a few dark-skinned Japanese (skin colour depends a lot on where you are from there).

Its a well known fact that in Japan lighter skin and less slanted eyes is considered more beautiful.
If I see sonic the hedgehog as "white" then I am in fact white washing him.
You can type up an article trying to explain it, but it is what it is.
And the example they tried to use of the white guy is stupid as hell. That's the style of that particular anime. You can then compare him to other anime with total different styles.
