I'm working at a startup right now. Nothing but whites/Asians in the building, 3.5 brehs and me. Ended up in a power struggle not long after I officially started because this cavewoman was trying to treat me like her maid rather than someone with their own job to do. Psuedo breh who works over me tryna rent me out to do her work like a slave :martin: I took it to the founder like:childplease: He calmed me down, but after that I was in :pacspit: mode mentally. It's like that Chapelle sketch. White people will drive you crazy, if you let 'em, and then act :merchant: when you demand respectful treatment.

Con: If you're black, you have to be up front and establish what you will and won't be doing or else you're going to be dealing with bullshyt.:francis:
Con: The lack of defined roles. If you're too productive, they'll have your black ass doing everything. You miss one thing and it's

Con: The lack of diversity. Startups are more racist than your average bear. Everyone's 12 years old and liberal but they're also:mjpls:

Con: Benefits suck. No overtime and you make less than you would in a stable company for some damn ping pong and no dress code:snoop:

Pros: Connections. It's easy to network. Everyone's connected to someone who works for some hugely successful tech company.:ehh:
Pros: You can learn a lot. A lot of these startups are straight:trash: but many founders know the ins and out of getting funding. I legit take notes:jbhmm:

Pros: Things are flexible, which can either work for or against you. Show when you want or don't show up at all as long as you get work done. :jawalrus:

Con: Things are flexible. You may get hit up on days that you're off. It's like everyone tries to trick you into thinking it's your company too:scust:

Absolutely, there's no permanency for us. I'm already about to start applying for new jobs and I've just started. I'm learning and saving as much as I can, but I want to line up some options so by December, if the founder isn't willing to renegotiate my salary, I'm onwards and upwards:cape:

Don't ever get too comfortable, friends, put yourself in a position where you can move on, if need be. Helps you to keep that:birdman: attitude.

Thanks for this post. Please try to contribute as often as you can.

Given the attitudes of the brehs is it reasonable to attempt headhunting while at the company other like minded brehs and brehettes?

Do you mean me trying to get other black folks on? I'm not in a position to hire, buuuut most of the people who work at my job got in because they were connected to someone else. If they start looking for someone else to work there, I'm definitely going to try to get my cousin on. I've been trying to push him to get out of retail. He's two years older than me and my ace up until two years ago. He can be a lil unmotivated, but he's smart and dependable.

There are probably dozens of companies in the building. The three black men I mentioned literally all work at another one. Just looked it up and it was started by an African breh and an Asian woman. So I'm pretty sure he hired the other two African brehs who work there. Would they hire more?

I can't say:jbhmm:I interviewed with another startup that was founded by an African woman and some upper middle class looking breh:mjpls:
Walked in and the office was populated with whites and one other breh who was also on that:mjpls: I didn't even get an email back from them.

I wasn't mad, though, because I honestly didn't see how their business would last/make money with the service they were offering.:yeshrug:

@Brehsbian

Yes doing some internal recruiting.
:whoa: I'm not in charge of that stuff. But I'mma give ya'll a guide for getting hired at a startup.

1)I suggest anyone looking to work with a startup to hit up angel.co

2) Put your profile up, use a nice attractive pic, think:jawalrus:or :smugfavre:not :martin: or:birdman:. Look the part.

3)Check the standout words of what folks are looking for in your area of interest, then throw them in your keywords.

4) Express interest in EVERYTHING and write succinct friendly notes to companies that you're truly interested in.

5) Keep track of your introductions and reply back via email ASAP. The site will make these for you and most of the time you'll be speaking directly with the founder of the startup you applied to (no HR is a big + for black people) .

6) Come back n' rep your girl when you get on:feedme:
