I don't think yall really wanna see republicans at ANY point of DC control

its cool now cause democrats basically run the district, but FEDERAL control of the hub of government?

Nah, bruh.

We gotta think ahead more than 5 minutes at a time.

As far as I’m concerned, they should reconnect the VA side since there are equally important installations there (National airport, Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery) and have the citizens federal votes and representatives counted according to which side of the river they on. So if your live in Alexandria then your rep is from VA and electoral vote goes to VA but if you in Washington then your rep and vote goes through Maryland. That’s a simple solution imo that maintains the federal city status while giving some concessions for no statehood like the reunification of DC proper.

These damn islands tho....:francis:

honestly you have to give people responsibility for where they choose to live.

No one makes you live in DC so if "representation" is that big of a deal, then move!

Just got back from doing some work out in the USVI.

First time being to the carribean since they were decimated with the last series of Hurricanes.

First thoughts:

Statehood is a must If we're going to fly our flags their. Third world country conditions outside of resorts, lagging recovery due to lack of funding.
Lack of infrastructure due to lack of funding.

Basically using these islands as a playground for the wealthy.give them statehood or give them freedom. :manny:

Again, we just saw the shyt Trump pulled.

And yall wanna make that a state with a whole governor and shyt?

C'mon people. THINK.
If DC were a state with the shyt trump pulled the Mayor who would essentially be the governor wouldn’t have to rely on the Feds to activate the national guard... MD Gov Hogan had the national guard for MD on standby by because he needed fed approval to enter into DC.. If DC was a state he would only need the DC Governor approval and when the Guard is in place then the DC gov would need the Feds approval to enter into their property ie: Captiol hill

Thats bullshyt breh, I can agree that DC’s uniqueness might make statehood a harder sell but at the very least citizens of the District should have the federal vote. Taxation without Representation is ridiculous. It doesn’t have to be Vatican City or Singapore but part of the issue the VA side had was the loss of representation. The MD side made it work because the majority of the federal installations were on that side of the river.

Given the nature of the city, you could tie certain aspects of the citizens rights to the original home states from which the whole city is derived. It’s not some “Oh well if you live there then you’re fukked!” Kinda deal. That’s the issue with politics in this country, it’s supposed to be a land of possibility but hardly any desire for innovation or ideas that solve problems. :manny:

Just think, these are Black people that are disenfranchised. That’s fukkin insane to me. PR could just as easily be a GOP stronghold like south Florida or a Dem stronghold like New York.

There’s no way of knowing right now. That’s the part that makes it weird. That’s a lot of people that don’t have the right to vote. And considering how insane things have been, more people prolly need the right to vote.

Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
So a quip I made in the 1/6 fukkery thread, the thread on Rethugs trying to split Washington State in half, and a sprinkle of the Bali dyke fiasco kinda sent me down a weird rabbit hole concerning U.S. territories and their status. There are actually quite a few U.S. “territories” that are stuck in a weird colonial limbo. The ones which stuck out to me were/are:

Puerto Rico
U.S. Virgin Islands
Guam
North Mariana Islands
American Samoa

Of course credit to wiki (List of states and territories of the United States - Wikipedia) for the list but these particular places were previously inhabited by native populations and passed through to U.S. possession either through spoils of war or purchase.

Outside of racist views of the past about demographics and voting tendencies I don’t really see why these places aren’t states by now?

From a right leaning perspective, it could provide new opportunities for development by adding new “tropical” type environments beyond Miami/South Florida. If Americans could move to these places like any other state it would bring an extra boost to a housing market that’s increasingly tapped out in other traditionally desirable housing markets. Would also provide much more fortified positions in regions of interest (PR-Latin America, V.I. - Anglophone Caribbean, Pacific Islands - Oceania, Australia, East Asia) which in the case of military would help deter the growing influence of China in the East or govts within the Caribbean/L.Am that lean towards American adversaries.

From a left leaning perspective, the territories would get the full benefits of citizenship under the law including federal standards on issues like race and discrimination, voting rights, etc. It would also provide another Avenue to longer term dominance after the republicans did every cut throat thing in the books to maintain power. Also, making these territories a part of America would play well with the multicultural platform presented for America. Adding those territories as states would be another investment into diversity.

To me, it just seems like an either or thing when it comes to this question, if you won’t give them statehood then cut them loose but if they’re important strategic possessions or territories that would be far too vulnerable to be independent after centuries of colonial rule then why not just do the right thing and give them statehood? I’m sure there are many things I haven’t considered or brought up so I’ll leave that to you all in HL.

What’s your opinion on it? :jbhmm:

Edit: I decided to expand the question to include Free Association states (Compact of Free Association - Wikipedia) which were part of the old Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands which was created by the UN and administered by the US Navy and later the Dept. of Interior roughly from the end of WWII until the mid 90s. These islands include:

Republic of Marshall Islands
Federated States of Micronesia
Palau

All are currently independent, but given this Free Association relationship and the fact that many of the commitments charged to the U.S. by the UN weren’t kept and have dragged them behind the developmental curve would it make more sense to just combine them with the other Pacific territories into one entity?

Nah. Some of them are logistical nightmares. PR is ok cause it's not too far. USVI ain't terrible either. But no, for the most part...

Why would they be logistical nightmares? They were useful at one point and some still remain so. If anything it provides an opportunity to continue the pivot to Asia and counterbalance China’s growing influence. :ehh:

Also, if they’re logistically difficult, do you support independence for these territories?

If they want to be independent, I wouldn't be against it.

Fact is, though, as territories they serve our military interests just fine.

Lol, doesn’t that sound kinda crazy tho? These people can give us their land and die for the flag but they have to remain in limbo in terms of full rights? I dunno, for a country as powerful as America it shouldn’t be too difficult to do. It was easy for us to create wild ass bombs and make parts of their home uninhabitable.

I think a gold mine is being missed too lowkey. Millions of people from that side of the world visit Guam every year just because it’s the closest thing to America without having to travel way farther to the mainland or even Hawaii. If anything, turning Micronesia into a highly developed state in the Union might help offset Chinese influence. :manny:

I’m also for independence if they choose that. Just lease the land and pay them properly for the military shyt.
