I dont think much people here know about the difference between genital herpes aka herpes 2 and oral herpes aka herpes 1.

While oral herpes/herpes 1 is common and will give your cold sores.

Genital herpes/herpes 2 is not common so dont have these guys here walking into a fire.

But yes safe sex and getting tested is always good. I might be wrong but the standard STD test does not usually test for herpes so it's something that you specifically have to ask for.
