Beginning today, people can start listing their mods at a price on Steam workshop. It's starting with Skyrim but I'm sure it's going to spread to other games as well. This is bullshyt. I loved the fact I could browse the workshop and pick and choose any new little thing I wanted FOR FREE for Skyrim etc. Now they are giving the option to charge for your mods...the number of free mods is going to diminish obviously.

What the hell? Greedy ass steam just NEEDS to have a piece of the modding pie too now. :why: :what:

Why the hell would I do that when I have mods nice and convenient in Steam that I can incorporate into my games with a few clicks of the button?

because you're going to have to pay for any new mods they want to charge you for :what:

You missed my point. But anyways, this is the first move that Steam did that rubbed me the wrong way. :smh:

or maybe the modders want a little paper for their hard work

to play devil's advocate, games like Skyrim sell a lot of copies on Steam because people know there's mods for it. but the modders see none of that money, even though their content helps sell the game

let them cook and see how it turns out. there will still be free mods

They do it because that's their passion..it's been that way since the beginning of PC gaming what the hell. Steam just wants more money, you know they're going to take their piece of every mod sold. They don't give a shyt about letting anyone cook if they weren't going to get to eat it Gabe that fat b*stard.

they can still do it for free if it's their 'passion'

Valve has already been doing this with their games, like TF2, Dota2, and CS:GO. since 2011 they've paid content creators $57 million for items in those games. of course they take their piece, but they also provide the platform and market-place for this to happen

in this situation I imagine Bethesda gets a 'piece' too (probably more than Valve). that's the real legal hurdle that would normally prevent someone from charging for a mod

Meh, I think it's a decent idea if the split is right. A lot of those modders put a crazy amount of time into making the mods and keeping them updated, on top of living their own lives and shyt. Not the worst thing to let them see some money off that.

just watched TB's video on the topic. he brings up good points on both sides

someone on reddit is claiming the breakdown is:

25% - content creator
30% - Valve
45% - Bethesda

This is an absolutely terrible idea. Mods have always been free this turns the modding scene into community made DLC, I hope this blows up in Valve's face, they are getting too greedy. A donations button would have been better if people feel the need to support someone.

I have no problem with people wanting to make money off of their creations, especially when they help drive sales of the game they are made for. The only thing i worry about is that the mods on the nexus network will be taken down and only made available on steam if it is successful.
