Am I being slow brehs or is there an obvious link I can eat from?

Genuine question that applies to more than just this album. It probably should be its own thread. But, in your minds, do you guys feel like an album should be judged less harshly if it's known ahead of time that the people making the album didn't really give a fukk?
That's an over simplification, but basically I saw someone saying Steppington doesn't really have much substance on it, and they also said they thought Redman needed more substance in his music to be an elite emcee, etc. So I was like, if Ev and Al said ahead of time they just fukking rapped about nothing and put a dozen or so joints on a disc and called it the album, shouldn't that be taken into account when "serious music critics" review it?
Like a summer action flick or comedy shouldn't be reviewed the same way a serious drama is reviewed. I think Redman is one of the best, and he's not pretending to be some deep and thoughtful dude, so I don't judge his music that way. I'd review his albums based on what he does, not what I think he should be doing.
Anyone else agree? No? Am I even making sense? I'm sick with the flu, so sorry.

LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAID ON JUST STEPhe got extra monotone by the 2nd or 3rd Dilated album too.. he was letting Rakaa legit outshine him after The Platform...he finally started rhyming in his real voice and i think it reinvigorated him. def made me give him a 2nd shot, i had written him off.
