The enigmatic and oppressively difficult mobile game Flappy Bird has turned into quite the cash cow for Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen. In an interview with The Verge, Nguyen revealed that the game, which has been sitting atop the App Store and Google Play Store charts for nearly a month, is earning on average $50,000 a day from in-app ads.

Mobile games studios generally spend months coding up deliberately addictive and viral titles, but Nguyen did it by spending a few nights coding when he got home from work.

Why do companies pay for these ads? Is there any research that suggests that these ads are effective in any way?

I don't know anyone who even pays any attention to them, let alone clicks on them...100% of the time I've clicked on them, it was by accident and I immediately backed out of it

Somebody gotta be clicking or else they wouldn't be paying for them but I agree I only click them by accident.

Basically

yeah but most of these app making companies fail....only very few make it big
Another parrot comment of course most fail but you don't have to be Lebron to make good money doing this or anything else. I swear they tell dummies these stats because they know just by saying something like this most will be like I can't make it and don't try smfh.

Banner ads on webpages is one thing, in apps, I can't believe anybody really clicking those...and proceeding to buy shyt or really look at what is on the page.

But my question was more about their effectiveness than number of clicks. Have there been any studies that have shown app ads to be an effective way to drum up business?

The costs of these ads may be so much lower than other mediums (such as TV, print, billboards, etc) that it may be worth to just throw a little money at it...I dunno :yeshrug:

you answered you're own question, of course they work otherwise they wouldn't do it. This isn't the first gaming app to have blown up and make alot of money so they're not using some unreliable monetary method that hasn't been successful in the past.

Anyways alot of dumbass little kids click and by some of that shyt. There are stories all the time of little kids using their parents mobile devices and racking up 100's in bills just clicking on random shyt. Not saying those are the only ppl that do it but that's a demographic.
