There are players on the bench of GSW that are starters everywhere else. I'm tired of hearing about Kerr being a great coach and the Steph hype is warranted, but a little excessive. I can't see him doing what WB does. Being the teams first and second option and still putting up the numbers he does. You can't even make the mistake and double Steph because they have so many weapons.
If GSW dont win the ship, it'll go down as one of the epic flops in NBA history.
Watching A game recently , I noticed something. They are talented. But not just talented, they are otherworldly, once in a generation talented. They've had good management but A LOT OF LUCK ALSO. They're a very rare case, maybe first time in NBA history kind of rare.
Let's start.
the highest paid player on the team is David Lee at 15 mil, who barely gets any playing time.
Steph is only making 10 million this year, They signed him to this deal at a time where he was still playing alongside Ellis and had a bad case of glass ankles. That deal made sense then, looking back now though? Steph is severely underpaid and is the biggest bargain in the entire league. 10 mil a year for a top 5 player, arguably top 2-3 depending on who you ask. That's one.
Secondly, Klay Thompson has emerged as the best TWO way SG in the league and he's still on his rookie contract only making 3 million this year. No one saw this coming when he was drafted, but GS lucked out here too.
Then you add Barnes, who's also emerging (slowly and steadily) as a very good two way forward. Someone who's energy can be depended on night in and night out. And who will have to be paid when his time comes. Who is also still on his rookie contract.
The biggest bargain on the team is Draymond who's the heart and soul of the squad, but was taken in the second round. So he's only making 900k this year still on his rookie contract, and no one saw him emerging the way he did, and he's playing well above what people thought he would.
Them not having to pay anyone but Curry as of late, who's still a huge bargain, has allowed them to put a supporting cast around what should have been the supporting cast.
Iggy making 12 mill off the bench,
Bogut making 12 million
And Steph making 10.
They're starting lineup has a combined salary of 28 million this year. That's with Draymond, Steph, Klay, Bogut and Barnes.
What we're seeing is so rare, and possibly never before seen. They will never have this window again.
All of their core pieces are underpaid. Which causes them to be overpowered talent wise because they don't have to pay anyone and everyone in their core is overachieving. EVERYONE.
I'm pulling for them to win. Hope they do. The amount of sheer luck they've had is unprecedented, and there won't be a window like this for them ever again.
This ain't got nothing to do with Kerr being great. They all came back better. And they all came on cheap deals.
This window is ending next year. (This exact window, they'll still be great, but not this good) They've been lucky as far as player progression and lucky as far as staying under the cap.
But soon they'll have to start paying more people.
