I first became privy to this cat on one of the old Our Gang/Little Rascals films. Black people REALLY played some humiliating roles, especially where if there was a prominent white man, there was a gentle, agreeable if not simple black butler to cater to him.
One of my favorite shows of all time, The Big Valley
Also followed this trope.
Silas the butler. One of the major characters Lee Majors had a broken family with an absentee father, and guess who took care of him?
Hannah, a maid that he dearly loved as a child. She had no ability to read and was submissive from start to finish.
It is great to see how far we have come in cinema and television, save for old blacksploitation, and it wasn't TOO long after Stepin Fetchit's heyday they black people were more grounded
in reality, less dopey and mired in comic relief, even if that reality were lowly, subservient roles.
