Stern: Kupchak 'panic' ended Paul-to-LAL deal

David Stern: Could've reworked CP3 deal, but Mitch Kupchak 'panicked'
Former NBA commissioner David Stern, who infamously vetoed a proposed 2011 trade that would have sent All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers, said attempts to rework the deal at the time fell apart because then-Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak "panicked."

Appearing on the "Nunyo & Company" podcast, which was released last week, Stern discussed the veto and how the three teams involved in the trade -- the Lakers, the league-owned New Orleans Hornets and the Houston Rockets -- attempted to renew talks.

Stern vetoed a trade that would have sent Paul to the Lakers, Pau Gasol to the Rockets, and Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Lamar Odom, Goran Dragic and a 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets.

On the podcast, Stern said he felt the trade could have been reworked but said talks fell apart when Kupchak traded Odom days after the original deal was vetoed.

"In the course of the weekend, we thought we could redo the deal," Stern said. "We really thought that Houston would be ready to part with [Kyle] Lowry, and we had a trade lined up for Odom that would have gotten us a good first-round draft pick. Not we, but my basketball folks.

"But Mitch Kupchak at the time panicked and moved Odom to Dallas. So the piece wasn't even there for us to play with at the time. So that was it -- just about what was good for the then-New Orleans Hornets.

They got Kyrie and turned another one into Love :dahell:

The post said Cleveland got 3 of 4 number 1 picks when LeBron left... Stop adding qualifiers by adding Kevin Love to the mix... I asked how many of those picks panned out... Now you're playing dumb like Kevin Love isn't a vet and hasn't looked particularly good with Cleveland... Again how many of those Cleveland 3 of 4 picks panned out... Don't be obtuse and ignore context.. Anthony Bennett killin shyt right smh.. Besides Kyrie, Bennett, and Wiggins, what do those picks mean to Cleveland now?

Can't forget cavs owner Dan Gilbert letter...

Commissioner,

It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.

This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.

Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.

I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).

I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.

I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.

When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise…

TYRONE GA!
He wouldn't of been with Kobe, Kobe/CP3//Dwight would've won at least one title before Kobe retired. fukk stern for the veto and fukk mitch for ultimately proving himself to be nothing more than a piece of shyt yes man living off Logo's name and legacy. Odom was so fukked up after the veto he was unsalvageable so that's why mitch traded him to the mavs.

So many people got screwed over this. How you gon gift wrap an elite (at the time) point guard to a well known racist piece of shyt and his loser franchise when one of your top teams was in the running and could've made a great storyline out of it (Kobe's championship farewell, meet LeBron heats in the Finals, chasing Jordans ring totals, etc), no fukk that fukk this and fukk all the jerks that was involved in screwing us over. NBA boring as fukk now compared to before, enjoy your league bytches. :pacspit:

LWO will restore order to this fukkfest

Kyrie and Love means championships for Cleveland. It doesn't matter if Wiggins "pans out", they flipped him for Love. And Love is playing like the all-star PF they thought they were getting.
